When she finished her J.D. in August 2023, she began working at an elder law office.

What is elder law?

When should I contact an attorney?
Elder law is a bit of a misnomer - it is not just for elderly people! Many people contact an attorney for estate planning when they have children. A common goal at this step is to make sure that there is an established guardian and financial planning in place in case of a life altering event. Other people contact elder attorneys as they or their parents age and begin to need more assistance. The focus at this point is often on asset protection and ensuring that their needs will be met over their lifetime.

You really do! An estate plan consists of a Durable Power of Attorney (POA), a Healthcare Power of Attorney, an Advanced Directive, and a Last Will and Testament. The Durable POA designates someone to act on your behalf if you become incapacitated. The Healthcare POA authorizes someone to make your healthcare decisions if you cannot. The Will names the person who will be in charge of handling your affairs after your death.
